History of Dixon, Iowa

Dixon was platted in 1854 by Jonathan Parker for R.S. Dickinson. It is stated that Mr. Dickinson believed that the site was a magnificent site on for a future city. Dixon’s name came from the abbreviated form of his name (Dick-son). About the time he laid out the town, he started a hotel to accommodate the traveling public. Also, a store for the advantage of the residents of the community. The growth of the village was very slow until 1870 when the Milwaukee road was completed to this point. In 1854, the Post Office was established with Mr. Dickinson as the post master. He was succeeded by C.B. Snyder.
Dixon once had a General Store, Hardware & Grocery Store, Farm Implement Store, an Elevator, a Barber shop, a Leather Shop, a Paint Shop, and a Drug Store. The town also included a Lumberyard, a Tavern,a School, and a Blacksmith.
The Church of Dixon was built in 1874. The Bank of Dixon was established in December 1899. The Town was incorporated March 27, 1909.
The Town of Dixon was no stranger to fires. In 1906, the Depot was stuck by lightening and destroyed by the resulting fire. In 1925, a garage fire destroyed Hansen’s garage. In 1940, the Dixon Hotel caught fire, was rebuilt and caught fire again in 1963.
In the 1950’s there were races and baseball games at Memorial Park. The largest population that Dixon has ever had was 280 in 1960.
Over time, Dixon has dwindled to a population of 202 residents. The old school house has closed with students now attending North Scott School District in Eldridge.
